Meitei People Flee Mizoram Amid Safety Concerns After Disturbing Incident in Manipur

Assam Offers Shelter to Displaced Meitei Community as Tensions Persist

Forty-one Meitei individuals have sought refuge in Assam, leaving Mizoram behind. This exodus was triggered by an advisory from a group of former militants urging the community to vacate the state. The catalyst for this distressing situation was the circulation of a viral video showing two women being paraded naked in Manipur.

The Superintendent of Police in Cachar, Numal Mahatta, disclosed that these Meitei people, comprising prosperous families, arrived in Silchar from neighboring Mizoram. Despite the Mizoram government providing security, they preferred not to take any chances and sought safety in Assam. The group includes college professors and senior government officials.

Amidst the mounting tension and ethnic violence in Manipur, thousands from Meitei, Kuki, and Hmar communities have fled to Assam for sanctuary since May 3.

In response to the situation, the Mizoram government reassured the Meitei community residing in the state about their safety, urging them to disregard any rumors. Nevertheless, some Meiteis had already left for their home states, fearing the escalating tension.

Tragically, allegations have emerged of an 18-year-old girl in Imphal East district, Manipur, being assaulted and gang-raped on May 15, shortly after the disturbing incident of the two women being stripped and paraded. The Trinamool Congress expressed concern over the law and order situation and called upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to be accountable for the failures in maintaining peace and security in the region.
